+ Why this one, and how far it grows

It is in gaming on purpose, and it is the lesson of this whole page: the word «gaming» on a box is not a specification. A P's RTX Ada graphics are the same NVIDIA silicon under another surname — Digital Trends' review says the P16 in its top configuration, with an RTX 5000 Ada, competes with a GeForce RTX 4090. The one linked here is not that configuration — it carries an RTX 2000 and it is what is in stock — and that is said so you compare with numbers and not with the word on the box. What it does bring, like the whole P line: certification from the software makers, cooling designed for hours of work, and four memory slots, which no gaming machine gives you.

How far it grows

Four slots against any gaming laptop's two, and two drives. It is the only one in this category that in three years gets expanded instead of replaced. The graphics are soldered, as on every laptop in the world.

It costs more than a gaming machine of the same performance, and that has to be said: the same review points out that an equally powerful Legion comes out cheaper. What you pay extra for is the certification, the cooling and the slots. If you are only going to play, do not buy it; if you are going to play AND work, there is no comparison. And for Linux, use Fedora or Pop!_OS: there are reports of the NVIDIA driver failing to install from Ubuntu 24.04's live boot.

On desktops there is not one single tower certified with Linux, and that improves the answer instead of leaving it without one: by building it you choose every chip, so the certification stops being needed. There are eight parts and none of them is optional.

Why none of them goes above 32 GB of memory

Because for gaming it does nothing. Between 32 and 64 GB the difference in games is practically zero; 64 starts to be worth it when you also stream, edit video or run virtual machines. And if one day you want it, you buy TWO 32 GB modules, never four 16s: filling all four slots on an AM5 board forces the memory down from 6000 to around 3600, raises latency by 30 to 40% and adds boot failures. Four modules perform WORSE than two.

Tom's Hardware documented the next step in 2026: the kernel retired the old `radeon` driver and moved GCN 1.0 and 1.1 to amdgpu, with 30% more performance on cards over a decade old.

GIGABYTE B850 Eagle WiFi

B850 is the 2026 chipset and it replaces the B650, which was from 2022. For gaming the chipset is what changes the result LEAST — a cheap B650 and an expensive X870E give the same frames with the same processor and the same card — but having the current generation costs little, and this one brings three M.2 slots and WiFi 6E.

AM5 motherboards with VRM heatsinks of enough mass for an eight-core Ryzen. As with MSI, it is worth saying in full: the two exact models on this site — B850 Eagle WiFi and X870E AORUS Pro Ice — have no independent review of their own; what has been measured is other boards from those same two series.

Who backs it: TechPowerUp publishes board-by-board VRM analysis of the AORUS line on B850 and X870E, and Tom's Hardware reviewed several from those two series: of the B850 AORUS Elite WiFi 7 it says its VRM heatsinks have plenty of mass and keep power delivery within specification.

RDNA 4 with 16 GB of video memory, which is what keeps it current. Open driver, inside the kernel: plug it in and it works.

On mini PCs, boards and graphics cards it delivers. On laptops it does not get into this site: it certifies zero models with Ubuntu, and it is also the maker where the same model changes wifi chip between revisions, so you cannot even check what is going to arrive.

Who backs it: Counted on ubuntu.com/certified/laptops on 25 Aug 2026: zero results for ASUS, for Zenbook and for Vivobook. Notebookcheck documents the wifi variants by region; linux-hardware.org records both chips under the same commercial name. On graphics cards the bar is different and it clears it: TechPowerUp measured the TUF RX 9070 XT's cooler as «the most powerful cooler of all the cards tested so far», with very good noise in its quiet BIOS.

With a caveat: If you already have one and it works, do not throw it out: uncertified does not mean it does not work. It means that if something in Linux breaks with the next update, no manufacturer is obliged to fix it.

The same card, and the easiest of the five to fit: 200 mm and ONE single 8-pin connector, with a 500 W system requirement. If the case is small or the power supply old, this one goes where the other does not.

Who backs it: TechPowerUp measured its 9070 XT as the quietest it had reviewed up to that point, with its own page of temperatures and noise.

Western Digital Western Digital SN7100 1 TB Gen4 NVMe

The Crucial that used to be here is QLC and DRAM-less: it starts at 7,100 MB/s and, once its cache fills, drops to 336. Installing a 100 GB game is something you feel. This one is TLC, its cache covers 95% of the drive and below that it writes at 2,860 MB/s — eight and a half times more. It gets hot under sustained work, so it is worth putting in the M.2 slot with a heatsink.

Its Black line NVMe SSDs. It is separate from «Western Digital Red Plus», which is the spinning-disk NAS line: a maker approved for one family does not vouch for another, and until 29 Aug 2026 the page showed the NAS drives' caveat underneath an SSD.

Who backs it: TechPowerUp measured the 2 TB SN7100 as «the fastest Gen 4 SSD we have ever tested», with Kioxia 218-layer BiCS8 TLC memory. Tom's Hardware agrees on what matters and qualifies the rest: record low power draw and surprising random reads, but only modest sustained performance against other PCIe 4.0 drives.

With a caveat: It has no DRAM: it uses WD's own four-channel Polaris 3 controller, designed to work without it. That matters here because the drive it replaced was ruled out for being «QLC and DRAM-less», and this one fixes the first thing, not the second. What saves it is that it is TLC and that its cache covers almost the whole drive.

It is here because the SN7100 is currently on backorder. It is TLC, which is what this site requires, and it is also DRAM-less — it uses system memory — so you are not changing the trade-off, only the availability.

Mid-range power supplies with 80 Plus Gold certification. And what is NOT known has to be said: the exact unit this site recommends, the MAG A650GN II, has no independent lab evaluation published. What has been measured is its siblings from the same line.

Who backs it: Cybenetics certified the MAG A650GLS as Platinum for efficiency and A for noise. Tom's Hardware measured the MPG A650GF — Gold on 80 Plus, Platinum on Cybenetics — and described it as quiet. Hardware Busters, which is a power supply lab, agrees on the line. None of the three is the exact model here.

With a caveat: In graphics cards it gets in ONLY as a comparison, the same as Zotac: its cards in this table are NVIDIA, whose driver is closed and lives OUTSIDE the kernel, so a kernel update can break it and no manufacturer is obliged to fix it. It is the opposite of the argument the AMD ones on this site get in on.

Who backs it: Tom's Hardware measured it as the best air cooler in its test and «whisper silent»: 61 °C over ambient with a 200 W limit, seven degrees below the DeepCool AK500. GamersNexus titled its review «The Champ».

Who backs it: GamersNexus took it apart and measured it: 25.5 dBA at full load —«the quietest RX 9070 XT tested so far»—, 56 °C core and 81 hotspot. TechPowerUp reviewed it separately with circuit analysis.

It is the ONLY one of the five that goes below 16 GB of video memory, and that has to be said with numbers: it costs $290 more than the build below, gives 11% more frames and has 4 GB LESS. In 2026 twelve gigabytes are the floor for 1440p, not headroom — Cyberpunk with path tracing already uses between 11 and 13. It is here because between that card and the next one there is nothing with 16 GB available, and that difference is {SALTO_GRAFICA}. If you can stretch, stretch.

It carries the same 3D cache as the 7800X3D, which is what actually gives frames, and GamersNexus measured them across more than 100 games: they land within 1% of each other. This one draws 55 W less, and costs considerably less — how much is not put in numbers because the 7800X3D is not in this site's ledger and a figure nobody can recompute ages without anybody noticing. It has six cores instead of eight, and for gaming that does not show today — if you are going to stream and play at once, then the eight-core one is worth it.

Not included in those prices

  • The monitor. It is what genuinely decides the experience, and a 1440p card with a 1080p 60 Hz monitor is money thrown away.
  • Keyboard, mouse and headphones.
  • The operating system. Here it costs nothing: that is precisely the point of this site.
  • Video cables usually come with the monitor, not with the graphics card.

Before you pay

  • That the memory goes in the SECOND and FOURTH slots, not the first two. Motherboards mark them A2 and B2, and it is in the manual. Put in wrong, the machine boots and runs slower without saying anything.
  • Going into the BIOS and turning on the EXPO profile. Without that setting the memory runs at 4800 instead of 6000, and it does not warn you: it just performs worse.
  • If the processor is from a generation earlier than the motherboard's and it does not boot first time, it is the BIOS. The ASUS board in these builds has a FlashBack button: it updates from a USB stick and with NO processor fitted.
  • Peeling the plastic film off the base of the cooler. It sounds like a joke and it is the number one cause of absurd temperatures on a new build.

And what about NVIDIA?

Yes, on purpose, and it is not that NVIDIA does not work: in a tower with Linux it works without reservations since 2024, when the modules that talk to the kernel became open and the flicker on modern desktops was fixed. Anything you read from before that date no longer applies.

AMD gets into these five for two reasons, and both can be checked. First: the amdgpu driver is open, it lives INSIDE the Linux kernel and AMD writes it, so the RDNA 4 cards worked from the day they launched and there is nothing to install. The expensive mistake in this use

Believing that the word «gaming» on the box is a specification. The only checkable thing here is a count, and we did it: Lenovo Legion certifies ZERO models with Ubuntu, and Alienware — the only certified gaming machine in the world — has 7. Mind what that measures: it does not say the machine breaks, it says the manufacturer has signed up to shipping patches when something in Linux breaks on that model. A Legion can be made to work, and if you already have one do not swap it for this; what there is not is anybody to complain to the day an update leaves you without wifi.

What changes on a desktop

It changes the criteria completely, and for the better. On a laptop you depend on somebody having certified that machine; on a tower you choose the graphics card, the network and the drive one by one, and none of them is soldered. That is why there is NO single recommended tower here: there are five complete builds, further down, with all eight parts of each. It is the only category where the desktop is not the cheap option — it is the correct one.
