What to check before you buy

A list of laptops goes stale in six months. What keeps working is knowing what to look at. There are 6 things, and with them you can judge any computer, whether or not it is on this page. The first disqualifies the whole machine and is new in this year's shops; the second is the one that ruins the most of the ones that do work, and hardly anybody checks it before paying.

The short version

  • That the processor is Intel or AMD, and it comes first because it is the only one that disqualifies the whole computer. The ones advertised as “Copilot+” carry Snapdragon, which is a different family of chips: TUXEDO, a company that builds nothing but Linux laptops, worked on one for a year and a half and cancelled it — it did not come close to the battery life that machine gives on Windows, and it was missing BIOS updates, fan control and virtualisation. On the seller's listing it is enough to look at the processor line.
  • The wifi chip, and it is the one that ruins the most machines. Make it Intel or MediaTek: they work from first boot and you never think about them again. If it is Realtek it will boot just the same — its drivers have been inside the system for years, however much of the internet keeps saying otherwise; the one that costs you evenings is one specific chip, the RTL8821CE, which freezes with power saving and is cured with two boot parameters. When buying, ask for Intel, which costs no more; if the machine is already yours and has Realtek, do not rule it out for that. The seller's listing almost never says which chip it carries; look it up by exact model on linux-hardware.org, where somebody who already tried has left their report.
  • The graphics card, and here the answer changes depending on whether it is a laptop or a tower. On a LAPTOP: Intel or AMD, which work without you doing anything. A laptop with NVIDIA carries two graphics chips — the processor's and the NVIDIA — and on Linux the second often does not switch off when you are not using it: it eats the battery even while asleep. The problem is not the driver, it is that the card does not go to sleep. On a TOWER it is another story and what was said years ago no longer applies: since 2024 NVIDIA uses open modules and fixed the flicker on modern desktops. If you are going to run AI models at home, NVIDIA in a tower is exactly what you want.
  • That it knows how to actually sleep, and this is the one nobody checks. Many new laptops no longer switch off when you close the lid: they stay half awake — waking for notifications and for the network, with the fan kicking in now and then — and you arrive at work with a flat battery or with a hot computer inside your bag. If you can test it, type this in the terminal: cat /sys/power/mem_sleep. If the word deep appears, that machine sleeps properly and the question is settled. If only s2idle appears, do not rule it out yet: many manufacturers removed the deep mode at the factory and it comes back from the BIOS, in the option usually called “Sleep State” or “Sleep Mode” — you set it to S3 or “Linux” instead of “Modern Standby” or “Windows”. If that option is not there either, it is one of the ones that cook in your bag and there is no fix.
  • Used business kit before cheap new kit, at the same price. A ThinkPad from the T line or a Dell from the Pro line from three years ago gives you a better screen, a better keyboard, a service manual published by the manufacturer, and spare parts you can actually get. A new entry-level laptop for that money comes with Realtek wifi and soldered memory, which is the one you can never change.
  • The fingerprint reader gets checked, not assumed. There are over 400 supported sensors and yours may or may not be one; it is decided by the sensor model, not by the laptop's brand. You see it with lsusb and you look that identifier up in the fprint project's list. Do not let it decide your purchase: if you genuinely need it, check before paying. Face unlock, that one you can write off.

First, wherever you are buying

You have an option this page does not assume

If you search for “best laptop for Linux” you will find three names over and over: Framework, System76 and TUXEDO. All three are excellent, and all three will sell to you — which is worth saying, because this page was written from Mexico, where none of them ship.

Framework ships to 36 countries and, in the whole of the Americas, only to the United States and Canada. System76 does reach Latin America (Costa Rica, Guatemala, Panama, Chile, Colombia, Peru) and still skips Mexico specifically. TUXEDO names Mexico on its list of countries it does not ship to. Slimbook, the Spanish one, states outright that it does not ship to Mexico. Checked country by country on 25 August 2026, against each manufacturer's own shipping pages.

So if you are reading this from somewhere those three deliver, buying a machine with Linux already installed and supported is a real option, and it is the shortest path there is. What you give up is price: they cost more than the equivalent business machine second-hand.

And there is a confusion that costs money in any country: “Ubuntu certified” does NOT mean “sold with Linux installed”. There are hundreds of certified models, and that certification is a promise that the hardware works — a real promise — but the sales channel is a different thing. Those machines are mostly sold with Windows.

That is why the rest of this page is written the way it is: buy business hardware — Dell Latitude or Precision, ThinkPad, ThinkCentre — and install the system yourself. It is half an hour of work and what you buy is exactly the same device. With one condition, and it is the usual one: ask about the wifi module before paying and ask for the Intel, not the Realtek. Everything else on this page can be fixed afterwards. That cannot.

That the processor is one of the usual ones

It comes first because it does not disqualify a part, it disqualifies the whole computer. Laptops advertised as “Copilot+” usually carry a Snapdragon processor, which is neither Intel nor AMD: it is ARM, a different family of chips. Windows runs on them; Linux is another story. The people who tell it best are TUXEDO, a company that does nothing but build laptops with Linux: they worked for a year and a half on a Snapdragon one and cancelled it, and they said why — they could not get close to the battery life that same machine gives on Windows, and it was missing everyday things like BIOS updates, fan control, virtualisation and full USB4. The public measurements from late 2025 point the same way: an AMD or an Intel of a similar tier does better on Linux. The next generation is being merged into the kernel as this is written, so it is a fact with an expiry date; today, August 2026, it is not a machine for this.

How you find out before paying

On the seller's listing it is enough to look at the processor line: if it says Snapdragon, ARM or “Copilot+ PC”, rule it out for Linux. Intel Core, Core Ultra or AMD Ryzen is what you want. Macs are a separate case and do not count here: if you already have an M1 or M2, Asahi exists and it is a genuinely complete Linux; on the M3 it is half-way there — the graphics still fall back to software — and on the M4 it does not exist yet.

  • Intel Core / Core Ultra · AMD Ryzenx86

    The usual family, the one they call x86. Everything else on this page is written for them.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon X · “Copilot+ PC”ARM, another family

    It boots on some models and that is where the good news ends: without the battery life the machine promises, without BIOS updates, without fan control and without virtualisation. The Linux laptop maker that tried it seriously cancelled its model after a year and a half.

    If you already have one It is not a bad computer: it is a Windows computer, and with Windows it does everything it promises. What it does not have today is everyday Linux. Before erasing anything, try it from a USB stick — step 2 of “The one you already have” — and look at the battery, the fan and suspend: those are the three that fail. And check again in a few months, because this has an expiry date: the next generation is being merged into the kernel as this is written.

  • Apple M1 and M2, with AsahiAsahi, up to M2

    You do not buy one for this: it is a Mac, and its system is macOS. What exists is a genuinely complete Linux for the first two generations.

    If you already have one On M1 and M2, Asahi is a system for working every day, with accelerated graphics. On M3 it barely runs — audio and frequencies yes, graphics in software — and on M4 there is not even an installer. None of this forces you to change machine: macOS is still there and Asahi installs alongside it.

The wifi chip

It is the part that ruins the most machines and the one nobody looks at. With Intel wifi the laptop works on first boot and you never think about it again. With Realtek it does boot — that changed, and years ago: its drivers went into the kernel between 2020 and 2023 — and out of the whole family there is ONE with an open bug, the RTL8821CE, which freezes when it goes into power saving; the fix is two boot parameters nobody guesses. That is why you ask for Intel when buying: it costs no more and it takes the lottery out. But having Realtek is not a reason to rule a machine out, and below it is separated out which is which.

How you find out before paying

On a machine you already have, in the terminal: lspci | grep -i network. On one you are going to buy, the Notebookcheck page for the exact model says so, and linux-hardware.org has the report of somebody who already tried. If the Amazon listing only says “Wi-Fi 6”, it is telling you the standard. The chip that implements it is a different thing, and it is the one that decides.

  • Intel (AX200, AX210, AX211, BE200)In the kernel

    Driver inside the kernel for years. It works in the installer, before you install anything. One piece of small print, and only for the BE200, the wifi 7 one: it wants kernel 6.5 or newer. Any recent image clears that easily; one that has been sitting around for two or three years does not.

  • MediaTek (MT7921, MT7922)In the kernel

    It went into the kernel in 2021 and today gives less trouble than plenty of older Intels. Common on AMD machines.

  • Qualcomm Atheros (ath9k, ath11k)In the kernel

    The old ath9k are among the most solid there are. The newer ath11k are in the kernel already.

  • Realtek RTL8821CEFreezes when asleep

    It is the only Realtek with an open bug, and it is worth separating from the rest because what you read out there has not been true for years: it has been in the kernel since 2020 (rtw88, version 5.9) and there is nothing to compile, it comes up on its own. What costs you is something else — it FREEZES or goes very slow when the card enters power saving, a clash between its low-power mode and the PCIe bus's, and it is still an open kernel bug as of March 2026.

    If you already have one It is fixed without buying anything: you boot with rtw88_core.disable_lps_deep=y and rtw88_pci.disable_aspm=y — half an hour of forums if you do not know it exists, two minutes if you do. If you would rather solve it in hardware, an Intel card costs around fifteen dollars and in almost every laptop it is one screw, BUT check yours first: ThinkPads from before 2015 — X250 and earlier — carry a BIOS whitelist, and with an unauthorised card the machine will not even boot, stopping at “1802: Unauthorized network card”. There the ways out are a card from Lenovo's own parts list, or a USB adapter, which touches nothing inside. It is the card in the laptop this site is written from.

  • Realtek RTL8723DE · RTL8852AE / RTL8852BEIn the kernel

    These ALREADY come in the kernel and there is nothing to compile: the 8723DE went in at version 5.8 (rtw88, 2020), the 8852AE at 5.18 and the 8852BE at 6.2 (rtw89). Any system today brings them up on its own and they do not have the 8821CE bug above. When BUYING, still prefer Intel if you get the choice — it costs no more and it takes the lottery out; having one of these is not a reason to rule a machine out.

  • Broadcom (BCM43xx)Firmware sold separately

    Closed firmware you have to download separately, and to download it you need the internet, which is exactly what you do not have. A legacy of laptops from years ago; still seen in second-hand kit.

    If you already have one It has a way out, and it is a one-off: connect over an ethernet cable — or share your phone's internet over USB, which Linux recognises on its own — and install your distribution's firmware package (on Ubuntu and Mint it is called bcmwl-kernel-source; on Fedora it comes through RPM Fusion). From then on the wifi works without touching it again. If you would rather not fight, an Intel USB wifi adapter costs little and does not require opening the machine.

The graphics card

It decides whether the desktop feels smooth or whether you are going to fight with the screen every time you update. And the answer changed: what was said about NVIDIA three years ago no longer applies. The flicker on modern desktops was fixed in driver 555, from May 2024, with what they call explicit sync; and since 560, that same summer, the modules that talk to the kernel are the open ones by default — on Turing cards and newer, meaning the GTX 16 series and RTX onwards; older ones stay on the closed modules, which have not been withdrawn. What still costs you on NVIDIA is not the picture, it is the power, and only on laptops: there you have two graphics chips and the dedicated one often does not switch off when you are not using it.

How you find out before paying

On the machine, in the terminal: lspci | grep -i vga. On the seller's listing: if it says “Intel Iris integrated graphics” or “AMD Radeon Graphics”, you have already won. If it says RTX or GTX on a LAPTOP, count on less battery; on a tower there is nothing to fear.

  • Intel integrated (Iris Xe, UHD, Arc)Open, in the kernel

    Open driver, inside the kernel, maintained by Intel. It is the lowest-friction option there is. With one piece of small print that applies to any brand-new chip: a processor from this year wants a system from this year. The Core Ultra series 3 — the ones they call Panther Lake — want kernel 6.17 or newer and Mesa 25.3 or later; with a two-year-old image the screen ends up falling back to software and you feel it everywhere.

  • AMD integrated or dedicated (Radeon, RDNA)Open, in the kernel

    The amdgpu driver is open and AMD writes it. For desktop and for games it is the best experience on Linux today, better than on Windows in several cases.

  • NVIDIA dedicatedOn a laptop, battery

    On a tower, no reservations: it is the only thing that genuinely works for running AI models at home, because CUDA has no substitute, and since 2024 the desktop no longer gives trouble. On a laptop is where you have to think about it: there are two graphics chips and the dedicated one often does not go to sleep, so you pay in battery even when you are not using it. It can be switched off entirely — the system knows how — but it does not come that way and has to be configured, and it wakes up again the moment you plug in a monitor over USB-C. If you go that way, Pop!_OS or Fedora do it for you; a minimal distribution leaves it to you.

    If you already have one On a tower there is nothing to do: install your distribution's driver and that is it. On a laptop you do not have to change machine either — what you pay is battery, not function. Start with a distribution that ships hybrid graphics sorted out (Pop!_OS or Fedora), and if you want to switch the dedicated one off entirely, the system knows how: you change the graphics mode and reboot. Watch out for what wakes it on its own: plugging in a monitor over USB-C.

The disk mode in the BIOS

It is the most maddening trap there is, because it does not look like a compatibility problem: it looks like your computer has no hard drive. You install Linux, you get to the point of choosing where, and the list is empty. The machine is fine and the disk is fine: the BIOS is presenting them in a mode only Windows understands.

How you find out before paying

It happens mostly to Dell and Lenovo out of the factory. In the BIOS you look for “SATA Operation” or “Storage Configuration” and change it from “RAID” or “Intel RST” to “AHCI”. It happens less and less — today's systems ship the driver that understands that mode and on most machines the installer sees the disk without touching anything — but when it does happen, it does not look like a compatibility problem: it looks like the computer has no disk. Serious warning: if Windows is already installed on that machine and you want to keep it, it has to be prepared BEFORE changing the mode or it will not boot again.

  • AHCIThe standard mode

    The standard mode. Linux sees the disk straight away.

  • RAID / Intel RSTA BIOS setting

    The case where Linux sees no disk at all. It is not a fault of the machine nor an incompatibility: it is a setting, it changes in the BIOS in two minutes, and on new machines it usually works without touching anything. It is red for what it costs if you do not know it exists, not for what it costs to fix.

    If you already have one Go into the BIOS, look for “SATA Operation” or “Storage Configuration” and change it from “RAID” or “Intel RST” to “AHCI”. That is all. With one serious condition: if Windows is already installed on that machine and you want to keep it, it has to be prepared BEFORE changing the mode — in Windows, boot once into safe mode — or it will not boot again.

The fingerprint reader and the infrared camera

This is here so it does not disappoint you later, not so you rule a machine out. The reader is a lottery you can look up before playing: there are over 400 supported sensors and yours may or may not be one, and that is decided not by the laptop's brand but by the exact model of the sensor. Windows Hello face unlock is another story, and there yes: write it off.

How you find out before paying

In the terminal: lsusb. It will give you back an identifier of four digits and four more, like this: 27c6:55a4. That is the fact — not the laptop's brand, which says nothing, because the same model ships with different sensors depending on the batch. With that identifier you search the fprint project's list (fprint.freedesktop.org/supported-devices.html), which today is past 400 readers and is the only source that helps: if yours is there, it works; if it is not, there is nothing to install. Goodix, ElanTech, AuthenTec and Synaptics dominate, and new models keep going in.

  • Fingerprint readerDepends on the sensor

    Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and it depends on the exact model of the sensor. Never take it for granted.

    If you already have one It takes a minute to check and it is not guesswork: lsusb in the terminal gives you back an identifier like 27c6:55a4, and you look that up in the fprint project's list. If it is there, it works; if it is not, there is nothing to install and the machine is still the same machine — you log in with a password, the way people always have.

  • Infrared camera (Windows Hello)No driver

    Windows face unlock does not exist on Linux. What exists is howdy, a community project and not a system feature.

    If you already have one You do not lose the camera: the camera is still a camera and works for video calls exactly as before. What there is not is face unlock, and that job is done by the fingerprint reader — if yours is on the list — or by the usual password. This does not disqualify any machine: it is here so it does not disappoint you later.

The other thing that decides

That it can be opened

A laptop dies of three things: the battery swells, the hinge snaps, or it runs short of memory. All three are fixable if the machine lets itself be opened, and none of them if it does not.

What decides is whether the memory goes in a slot or is soldered to the board. Soldered means the 8 or 16 GB you bought are the ones you are going to have for the rest of the device's life, and there is no workshop that can change it.

And recently there is a third answer that changes the advice, so it is worth knowing the name: LPCAMM2. It is a flat module that screws down next to the processor and DOES come out, with the low power draw of soldered memory and without its life sentence. It debuted on the ThinkPad P1 Gen 7 and by mid-2026 it is already in the ThinkBook 14+ and 16+, in the new T line, and Dell is moving the whole Precision line across. It costs more than ordinary memory and it is not everywhere — but “thin” has stopped automatically meaning “soldered forever”, and on a machine you are going to keep for eight years that is the whole difference.

  • ThinkPad T (T480, T14 Gen 5)Two slots

    The line that holds up the reputation. The T480 even has an external battery you change without opening the machine.

  • ThinkPad P (P14s, P16)Two to four slots

    The most open thing sold today. The P16 Gen 2 takes four modules and two drives.

  • Dell Latitude 5000 (5420)Two slots

    Two memory slots, two drive slots, and a service manual with the step-by-step for every part.

  • ThinkPad T14 Gen 6Depends on the processor

    The same name covers two different machines: with Arrow Lake it has slots, with Lunar Lake the memory is soldered. Here the model is not enough, you have to look at the processor.

  • ThinkPad T14s, X13, X1 CarbonSoldered

    The thin ones. They open, and you can change the drive and the battery, but the memory they come with is the memory they keep forever. If you buy one, make it a 16 GB one.

  • The ones that already ship LPCAMM2 (P1 Gen 7, ThinkBook 14+ and 16+, Precision 2026)A module you can change

    The best of both: it draws power like soldered memory and comes out with a screwdriver. It is new and still costs more, but it is where everything is heading — Dell is moving the entire Precision line this year. Note the ThinkBook on that list: it is there for its memory, which is exemplary, and it is still not recommended on this site because of chassis and spare parts. On memory it measures best; on everything else, no.

  • Dell InspironVaries

    The consumer range, and the difference with the Latitude can be checked without taking anybody's word for it: Dell publishes that the Latitude family's materials passed MIL-STD 810H testing, and does not publish that test for the Inspiron. There is a service manual, so it opens and parts can be changed; what it does not have is that testing behind it.

The one thing that cannot be fixed: the supervisor password

A business laptop can arrive with the BIOS supervisor password of the company that used it before still set. The power-on one comes off by pulling the battery. That one does not. Lenovo writes it plainly in its own manual: there is no procedure to clear it and the motherboard has to be replaced. It is a dead machine that looks perfect in the photos.

Ask the seller for a photo of the BIOS screen open on the Security section — not of the Windows desktop — and a video of the full boot. If they will not send it, do not buy it.

And before you pay

  • Hinges: that it opens and closes ten times without cracking and without the bottom cover lifting.
  • Battery: cycles and health from software, not from what they tell you.
  • Keyboard: every key, especially the ones in the corners.
  • Charger: that the part number is the manufacturer's.

With the criteria in hand

The makers that pass

None of them gets in on reputation. Each gets in because somebody independent backs it, and here it says who. A manufacturer that certifies Ubuntu is committing itself to shipping patches when something breaks; one that does not owes you nothing.

Laptops

Lenovo ThinkPad

The family with the most years of Linux support done by the manufacturer itself, and with spare parts you can actually get. With a surname that matters: the T and P lines carry memory in slots, and the thin ones (T14s, X13, X1 Carbon) carry it soldered.

Dell Latitude

Dell Latitude

The business range, and the one that turns up used and well priced most often. The Latitude 5420 has two memory slots, two drive slots and a service manual with the step-by-step for each: of the three refurbished machines you see in Mexico, it is the one that lets itself be repaired best.

Dell XPS

Dell's good-looking range, and the one it costs most to leave out. Dell dropped the name in 2025 and brought it back in 2026 after customers complained; the version with Ubuntu factory-installed is announced for later in 2026 and is not on sale yet.

Dell's gaming range, and the only gaming machine in the world that appears certified with Linux: 7 models, all from the 16 Aurora line.

Mini PCs

For a great many people the right answer is a box the size of a book plugged into the monitor you already have. It costs half as much and it has no battery to swell up in three years.

ASUS

On mini PCs, boards and graphics cards it delivers. On laptops it does not get into this site: it certifies zero models with Ubuntu, and it is also the maker where the same model changes wifi chip between revisions, so you cannot even check what is going to arrive.

Notebookcheck documents the wifi variants by region; linux-hardware.org records both chips under the same commercial name. On graphics cards the bar is different and it clears it: TechPowerUp measured the TUF RX 9070 XT's cooler as «the most powerful cooler of all the cards tested so far», with very good noise in its quiet BIOS.

Beelink

Cheap, quiet mini PC. It is the most common way into a 2026 homelab.

The best ones, and where they do and do not ship

These are the makers that sell laptops with Linux already on them. Checked against each one's own shipping pages on 25 August 2026: none of them ships to Mexico, which is why the rest of this page is written the way it is — but if you are reading from somewhere they do deliver, they are the shortest path there is.

  • FrameworkThe laptop that opens with a screwdriver and lets you change everything. The best for Linux there is today.

    Framework publishes official Fedora and Ubuntu guides and ships firmware through LVFS.

  • System76Sells exclusively with Linux and makes its own distribution (Pop!_OS).

    Linux hardware manufacturer; maintains Pop!_OS and open firmware.

  • TUXEDO ComputersGerman manufacturer that sells exclusively with Linux and maintains its own distribution.

    Its list of excluded countries names Mexico explicitly under «No shipping possible» (checked 25 Aug 2026).

  • SlimbookSpanish maker of Linux laptops, closely tied to KDE.

    Its shipping page states outright that it does NOT ship to Brazil, Mexico or Turkey.

The exception, with caveats

  • Star LabsLaptops that leave the factory with Linux and with open firmware. Of the Linux-only makers, it is the only one showing signs of selling to Mexico.

    Checked by hand on 25 Aug 2026: its region selector includes Mexico under «Americas» and quotes in pesos. Note what that proves and what it does not — it is a CURRENCY selector, not a shipping policy, and on that same page there are countries with currencies that do not match them.

    Before paying, write to them and confirm shipping to your address. What has been verified is that their shop quotes in your currency; whether they actually dispatch to a given country is not stated on any shipping page that could be read — for Mexico in particular, nothing confirms it.

And what to know if you go for one anyway

  • Alienware

    Dell's gaming range, and the only gaming machine in the world that appears certified with Linux: 7 models, all from the 16 Aurora line.

    Certified does not mean no work: it carries NVIDIA, and NVIDIA in a laptop means a closed driver and hybrid graphics. Fedora or Pop!_OS sort it out for you; a minimal distribution leaves it to you.

How to read a ThinkPad's name

A ThinkPad's name is not a marketing name: it is a compressed spec sheet. Somebody who can read it knows, without opening anything, whether the memory sits in a slot or is soldered, and what that machine was designed for. It is the only thing on this page that helps you with a computer that is not on it.

If you only remember five things

  • The LETTER says what it was designed for: T work, E entry, X lightness, P power.
  • The NUMBER is inches, not a version.
  • The “s” is the red flag: it almost always means soldered memory.
  • The generation changes the machine, not just the year: the same name can come with slots or without.
  • And “gaming” on a box is not a specification. A P with RTX Ada beats plenty of them.
  • Soldered is not just a memory ceiling: it is the ceiling on WHAT the machine is good for for the rest of its life. That is decided once and for good.

The letter says what it was designed for

  • T

    The work one

    The safe recommendation for almost everybody. It is the one that holds up the brand's reputation: serious chassis, good keyboard, published service manual and spare parts you can get.

    It is the one to look for by default. If you are torn between a T and anything else at the same price, it is the T.

  • E

    The entry one

    Aimed at small businesses. It keeps what matters — memory slot, published manual, cheap parts — and cuts back on what shows: plastic chassis and a hinge from another league.

    Its documented weak point is the screen: the E series carries panels around 250 cd/m² and roughly 60% sRGB. If you are going to look at it eight hours a day, check before paying.

  • L

    The fleet one

    The middle ground companies buy by the truckload. Neither the T's chassis nor the E's cutbacks.

    It turns up often and cheap on the refurbished market, precisely for that reason: it sold in enormous batches.

  • X

    The ultralight one

    It genuinely weighs little, not just on the spec sheet. The X1 Carbon is the flagship: carbon fibre chassis, around 1.1 kg.

    Here is the most expensive trap of all, and the reason this page exists: on the X1 Carbon the memory is SOLDERED, and has been for many generations. The one you buy is the one you keep forever — and with it, the ceiling on what it will ever be good for: with 16 GB a Carbon handles office or school work without breaking a sweat, and it will never do heavy work, because there is nowhere to put more.

  • P

    The workstation

    P is for performance. Professional NVIDIA RTX Ada graphics, certified by the software makers, and up to four memory slots.

    And here it goes the other way from the trap above: a P with RTX Ada competes with a laptop sold as gaming, because it is the same silicon under another surname. The word “gaming” on the box is not a specification.

And at Dell, which uses names instead of letters

  • Latitude

    Now Dell Pro

    The business range, the one IT departments, hospitals and governments buy. It is the equivalent of a ThinkPad T.

    Dell renamed it “Dell Pro” in 2025. For buying refurbished you still search for Latitude: that is how the second-hand fleet is labelled.

  • Precision

    The workstation

    The equivalent of a ThinkPad P: professional graphics and certification from the software makers.

    It became “Dell Pro Max” in 2025 and at CES 2026 Dell reversed course: the Precision name came back.

  • OptiPlex

    The business desktop

    The office tower and mini. It is one of the things companies shed most, and therefore the cheapest to get refurbished.

    The Micro format is the direct rival of the ThinkCentre Tiny, and for a homelab the two serve equally well.

  • Vostro

    Now Dell Pro Essential

    The middle ground for small business: less factory software than an Inspiron and slightly better built, without reaching Latitude.

    It is not the business range even though it is sold “for business”. If the budget stretches, a refurbished Latitude is the better machine.

  • Inspiron · XPS

    The consumer ones

    Inspiron is the home range. XPS is the pretty, expensive one — an excellent machine, but consumer: Dell itself classifies it as its premium consumer brand, not business.

    Neither gets onto this site, and XPS is the one that costs most to leave out: it is among the best Windows laptops there are. But it is not the business range, and this site recommends the business range.

And what you will not find here

This site recommends one thing only: business-grade kit. That is not the same as “the best” or “the most expensive”. It is the machine designed so an IT department can open it, repair it and keep it running for five years — and out of that come the published manual, the spare part that exists and the chassis that holds up. Consumer-grade kit is designed to hit a shelf price.

  • ThinkPad E · ThinkBook

    It is the entry line for small business, not the business range: plastic chassis, a hinge from another league and panels around 250 cd/m². It carries the ThinkPad surname and not the construction. With one precision this site owes itself, because it praises them by name two sections earlier: the 2026 ThinkBook 14+ and 16+ carry LPCAMM2 and on memory they are among the best sold today — that is true and it stays said. They are out for the construction and for the spare-parts channel, not for the memory.

  • IdeaPad · IdeaCentre · Yoga · Legion

    Lenovo's consumer lines. The number says it on its own: ThinkCentre certifies 87 models with Ubuntu and IdeaCentre 2. Legion, zero.

  • Inspiron · Vostro

    Dell's home and small-business ranges. Vostro is half-way there and still does not reach Latitude.

  • XPS

    Among the best Windows laptops there are, and consumer — Dell itself classifies it as its premium consumer brand. It is out under the same rule as everything else, and it is the one that costs most to leave.

  • Alienware

    Gaming range, not business. It is still named in the method because it is the ONLY gaming laptop certified with Ubuntu that exists — 7 models — and that fact does not stop being true just because it is not recommended.

And what comes after the letter

  • The numberThe screen size in inches

    A T14 is 14 inches, a P16 is 16. It is not a version or a model: it is the size.

  • Gen NThe generation

    It tells you the machine's age and which processor generation it carries. Two ThinkPads with the SAME name and a different Gen can be different machines: the T14 Gen 6 has slots with one processor and soldered memory with another.

  • The s in T14sSlim

    It is the most important signal of all and the one least looked at: the “s” almost always means SOLDERED MEMORY. A T480 and a T480s are named almost the same, cost almost the same, and only one can be upgraded.

  • The i in P16s iIt carries an Intel processor

    It distinguishes the Intel version from the AMD one. It says nothing about quality; it says which chip it carries and, with it, which integrated graphics.

  • Yoga360-degree hinge and touchscreen

    It folds and is used as a tablet. It weighs more and costs more for that hinge; if you are not going to use it, it is money on an extra part that is also the one that breaks.

Before paying a stranger

How to buy refurbished without being taken for a ride

Refurbished business kit is almost always a better buy than new consumer kit: same money, better machine. Amazon sells it as “renewed”, not as “used”, and that word matters — it comes with inspection and a store warranty. What it does NOT come with is anybody having checked the four things below.

The one thing that cannot be fixed: the supervisor password

A business laptop can arrive with the BIOS supervisor password the previous company set still on it. The power-on one comes off by pulling the battery. That one does not. Lenovo writes it plainly in its own manual: there is no procedure to clear it and the motherboard has to be replaced. It is a dead machine that looks perfect in the photos.

Ask the seller for a photo of the BIOS screen open on the Security section — not of the Windows desktop — and a video of the full boot. If they will not send it, do not buy it. It is the only question on this list with no second chance.

  • The battery, with a number

    It is the consumable on a machine that is a few years old, and the only one that degrades even if nobody uses it. On a T480 the original Lenovo one is not cheap and the generics have a reputation for lasting weeks.

    Ask for the health report from software, not from what they tell you: how many cycles it has and what percentage of capacity is left. 64% on a six-year-old machine is normal; “it's fine” is not a fact.

  • The hinges and the chassis

    It is what costs more than the machine and what almost never comes out right after being repaired.

    That it opens and closes ten times without cracking and without the bottom cover lifting. On video, not in a photo.

  • The EXACT model, letter by letter

    A T480 and a T480s are named almost the same, cost almost the same, and only one can be upgraded: the “s” carries 8 GB soldered and a single slot. The same trap runs through the whole line.

    That the listing states the full model and the processor. In recent generations the same name comes with a slot on one chip and soldered memory on another.

  • The charger

    A generic charger with fewer watts charges slowly or does not charge under load, and it is one of the things most often swapped out to make a batch cheaper.

    That the part number is the manufacturer's.

And one thing that is not a defect but changes the pace: refurbished kit is sold in batches, not produced. Several of the machines on this site say “only 3 or 4 left” when you look. If you find yours and the price adds up, do not leave it for next month — it is not that it will go up, it is that it may not be there.

And what that review found, said out loud because it is the part nobody publishes: three facts on this very page were false — not through carelessness, but because they were true five years ago and half the internet keeps repeating them. The biggest one, that Realtek wifi has to be compiled by hand: it went into the kernel between 2020 and 2023. The recommendation to ask for Intel is still up there, but now for the reason that genuinely holds it up.
