Before spending on this
The rack: when it makes sense, and how many inches
A rack is a metal frame with two rails 19 inches apart, which is the measurement server equipment has been built to since the 1950s. It tidies, stacks and gives the cabling somewhere to go. It does not cool better than a shelf and it does not make anything run faster. It makes sense once you already have three or four devices getting in each other's way.
The first decision is the width, and it is where most money gets thrown away. The 10-inch mini-racks became fashionable and they look lovely, but what sinks them is the ecosystem: practically every piece of equipment in the world is built to 19 inches. At 10 you end up improvising 3D-printed parts, and that is no longer building a homelab, it is a separate hobby. And they are expensive per unit of space: ServeTheHome measured a 10-inch mini-rack at about 25 dollars per rack unit, against 6.50 for a 19-inch open frame.
The second is open or enclosed. For a house, the community prefers the open frame without argument: it costs far less and it breathes. The enclosed cabinet makes sense if there are children, dust or pets, and there you have to think about airflow properly.
And three warnings, each of which costs money. Measure the depth of your kit before buying: a many-bay chassis can want 26 inches and will not fit a short rack. Respect the load capacity and never exceed it. And if the rack is wall-mounted, it goes bolted to the wall: propped on a shelf it is not stable, and that is not an opinion.
Against the noise, what works is swapping the server's small fans — which are the ones making the noise — for 120 or 140 millimetre ones. The silent rack does not exist.

The part that gets bought first and that almost nobody buys first. Make sure it has USB: that is what lets the server find out about the power cut and shut itself down before the battery runs out. Without that cable, it is an expensive battery.

This is where the networking that actually teaches you something starts. Putting the cameras and the smart-home devices in their own zone is the biggest security improvement you can make in an afternoon.

19-inch open-frame rack, 8U to 12U
StarTech
Open frame, not a cabinet: for a house it costs far less and breathes infinitely better. Start small — an 8U already tidies four devices — and measure the DEPTH of your kit before paying.

Cage nuts and M5 screws
The purchase everybody forgets and that stops the build dead. A rack comes with about twenty: enough for five machines. If you are going to mount 2U units, ask for more from the start and not in a second order.

Rack shelf
For kit with no mounting ears, which is almost everything in a house: the mini PC, the router, the external drive. And it lowers the centre of gravity, which is what steadies an open frame.

Quiet 120 or 140 mm fans
Only if you ended up with enterprise kit. Swapping the little 40 mm fans for big ones is the only thing that genuinely quietens a server, and it is cheaper than regretting it.

2.5 Gb network card
The sweet spot of 2026: cheap, fanless and cool. Only when you genuinely move big files between machines; before that it is money on an upgrade you will not notice. And one warning that is expensive to learn: if you go to 10 Gb, copper SFP+ modules run enormously hot — there are measurements of 65 to 95 °C on fanless gear.
